Breakfast & Cereals
Merricks Kitchen — Granola Merricks Kitchen makes granola the way it should be made — whole food ingredients only, nothing manufactured, nothing you can't name. Their Brekky Mix comes in three varieties: Original, Choc Chip, and with Fruit. All three are built to their Triple Zero standard: zero seed oils, zero refined sugar, zero artificial anything.

The brand was founded by Sarah, named for Merricks — a small seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula where her mother cooked from scratch, from the garden, from what was in season. That same philosophy runs through every ingredient decision today.

The oil choice matters. Every variety uses extra virgin olive oil as the only oil in the recipe. Most granolas use seed oils like canola or sunflower. Many "healthy" granolas swap those for coconut oil, which sounds better but carries significant saturated fat. Extra virgin olive oil is cold-pressed, retains its natural polyphenols, and is high in monounsaturated fats. It is a genuinely different choice, not a marketing one.

The same philosophy extends to every ingredient. Merricks Kitchen uses Ceylon cinnamon rather than the cheaper cassia variety, and Madagascar vanilla powder rather than extract. These cost meaningfully more, but they create natural flavour complexity that lets the range achieve 2–3g added sugar per serving without relying on sugar substitutes. Organic maple syrup is the only sweetener across the line — no cane sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no natural flavours.

On the numbers: 2–3g added sugar per serving, zero sodium, 6–8g protein, 5–6g fibre. The market average for granola sits at 7–12g added sugar and most carry 100–200mg sodium. Those numbers are achieved using whole food ingredients, not substitutes. Serving sizes are also honest: ½ cup for Original and With Fruit, ⅓ cup for Choc Chip. Many competitors publish nutrition at ¼ cup, which makes their sugar figures look more acceptable than they are.

All three varieties are independently Non-UPF Verified by WISEcode, rated Minimally Processed — certified March 2026. Nothing in the formulation changed to earn it. They were already there.

Small-batch, founder-led, based in Orange County, California. Available direct-to-consumer, select local retail, Bubble Goods, and Amazon.

Nuts & Dried Fruit
Dave & Jon's — Candy Dates Dave & Jon's Candy Dates range turns Medjool dates into something that genuinely tastes like your favourite sweets — Strawberry Milkshake, Sour Watermelon, Fizzy Bottles, Cinnamon Bun, and more — using only real, natural ingredients. The indulgent hit without the junk.

Their snack factory sits in the fields and meadows of Uppland, just outside Uppsala, where they roast, flavour, and package everything in-house. The factory is modern, but their values are old school — which is why they have entirely excluded palm oil from all of their products.

Important disclaimers
Independent food brands don't always mean they use clean or the "right" ingredients. Always check labels and do your own research first. Also, try to check who manufactures ingredients, as sometimes large and toxic corporations are still in control of that rather than the brand itself.

Every brand here is still a far better choice than what you'll find in most supermarkets. Do your research, but don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
